Brick Lane has suffered it’s ‘worst year ever’ as a number of curry houses and local businesses have shut down since the start of 2012.
As well as a nationwide rise in VAT adding to the strain businesses on ‘curry mile’ have suffered a massive 40% drop in trade forcing many of them to shut their doors to the public.
So why is Brick Lane in so much trouble? Well there’s several reasons that it could be including the fact that the council decided to rid the area of its iconic cobbles before the arrival of the Olympics. A move which was met with much disgust from fans of the East London area.
Similarly the Games themselves have dealt a blow to the area with the expected footfall of Olympic visitors being no where near what businesses were expecting.
According to a report today three curry houses have shut since January with several others currently up for sale in the area. Whatever the reasons things don’t look to bright for one of London’s most iconic areas.
