Believe it or not news has broken today that Warner Bros. are considering making a prequel to the 1980 classic, The Shining but what is it about 2012 that’s making filmmakers so unimaginative?
The year began with the news that Bruce Almighty, Beetlejuice and Will Smith’s Hancock were all going to get sequels and throughout the next few months a whole load of other sequels, prequels and remakes were announced. Among the titles being worked on are Sin City 2, a new Chucky, Independence Day 2, Toy Story 4, Finding Nemo 2, Hocus Pocus 2 and a Top Gun sequel. The list doesn’t end there but frankly, we don’t have all morning.
Originally based on the novel by Stephen King The Shining went on to become one of the most famous films of all time but given the fact it was based on the book we can’t imagine how they’ll work on a prequel seeing as there’s nothing to base it on. While nothing’s set in stone meetings are currently taking place to see if a prequel could work and if so how they’d go about it.
It seems to us like studios and filmmakers are lacking some imagination this year and we’re not sure what it’ll take to make them realise that just because a film was a classic doesn’t mean anyone wants to see a remake or a follow up of it.
