When it comes to being over precious about their idols fans don’t come much more extreme than those of boy bands.
For as long as any of us can remember boy band fans have always been the ones to mess with. From Take That to One Direction their most dedicated fans will literally fight until the bitter end to defend their favourite pop acts.
Which is why we can’t say we’re surprised to see what is going on over on Twitter between Perez Hilton and some very upset One Direction fans. For those of those who haven’t already seen what’s going on this is what’s happened so far… celebrity blogger Perez Hilton posted a video last night of band member Zayn allegedly cheating on his girlfriend with a girl he met in a hotel corridor. The evidence seems pretty solid (it’s in video form after all) and the singer deleted his Twitter account shortly after things began to kick off. The backlash the blogger has received since has caused his name to be trending globally on Twitter for nearly 24 hours. Something we’re pretty sure must be a record.
In case you can’t be bothered to read them yourself here’s some of the most shocking tweets currently coming from the accounts of 1D fans…
‘I hope Perez Hilton will die with AIDS.’
‘Everyone hates Perez Hilton. If you don’t, than you’re not from this world.’
‘”I love Perez Hilton!” said nobody.’
‘Dude,Stop Posting Things About One Direction,You Are A Irrelevant Person Okay,Over 5M People Want You To Die,Isn’t That Nice!?’
‘Perez Hilton, you’re messing with the wrong fandom. This is gonna be ur biggest regret, buddy. Directioners are gonna end your little career.’
We could go on for quite a while but none of us have all day.
Now we can’t admit to being the biggest fans of Hilton but to wish death and an incurable illness on someone who is merely reporting on a piece of news that is very much in the public domain seems beyond ridiculous to us. Especially as that’s kind of his job.
And Hilton isn’t the only one to feel the fans rath. TV presenter Caroline Flack was recently in the firing line after dating band member Harry Styles. Not only did she get death threats but a fanzine also printed a cut out voodoo doll of her along with annotations that included one saying ‘Note: zero engagement rings. Because no one wants to me with her’. Nice.
Admittedly it’s been a fair few years since we’ve found ourselves being passionate about a boy band so perhaps we can’t relate but it seems to us like there’s a couple of hundred thousand people out there who really need to get a grip on reality.
