So here’s a potentially worrying bit of menswear news. Tartan trousers are officially On Trend.
We’re not sure how we feel about this. Our first reaction was to snigger and say something along the lines of, ‘what, like Rupert Bear?’.
Then Tony Blair’s election campaign theme flooded into our brain along with disturbing images of D:Ream frontman Peter Cunnah (the last great tartan trouser proponent) and we had to go mop our brow with a suitably dour and pattern-free pair of black slacks.
But in the name of fashion forecasting, we felt compelled to at least equip you with the news; what you do with it is your own business.
So Jigsaw, which has recently relaunched its menswear collection, is leading the way on this one. These Black Watch wool trousers are actually not as Peter Cunnah crazy as they could be. The soft blue and green combo is more wearable than red and, as long as you don’t pair them with a hunting jacket or the like, could feasibly exist successfully outside of a country estate setting.
In the event that you love the trend and want to spend a bit more on it, these Alexander McQueen trousers are a similarly muted nod to the trend at Mr Porter.
Of course, there’s no point in doing a trend half-arsed. If you’re going to do it, how about these red tartan trews from Hackett? Screw it, pair them with a hunting jacket and live the D:Ream if you like, there are worse things to resemble than a friendly comic strip bear.
