The uniform for London 2012 volunteers is so hideous that Boris Johnson even apologised for it as he revealed it at a press launch yesterday.

London mayor Johnson revealed the purple and pink uniforms a crowd made up of 30 of the 8,000 Olympic volunteers after telling them, ‘I hope you don’t feel too ridiculous’. Lucky volunteers will be forced to wear pink and purple polo shirts with a matching fleece and rucksack as well as a rather fetching straw trilby hat with pink ribbon. Revealing the uniform at Wimbledon station Johnson said, ‘What do you think of the uniform? It’s quite striking isn’t it. I hope you don’t feel too ridiculous.’

This isn’t the first time an Oympic design has raised eyebrows, the London 2012 logo (on which the uniforms are based) was met with a less than enthusiastic response when it was revealed in 2007. Ever the joker when asked if Johnson would wear the uniform himself he replied, ‘I wouldn’t rule it out. I have a fleece already but this could be a good replacement. It’s in extremely good taste and style, and typical of London.’
