They’re a major part of history and heritage, they point to past times and past minds but sadly the Blue Plaque is to be no more.
The commemorative plaques are all over London and across the country, with a total of 869 placed around the United Kingdom and beyond lay amongst bricks in their trademark blue honouring everyone from Novelists to Prime Ministers.
With a cut of 34% the government funded, English Heritage scheme will after a staggering 148 years, stop accepting new nominations for plaques.
The programme will still go ahead with existing ones which are to be erected over the next two years and there is hope and a buzz within arts and heritage circles that alternative funding may be found to get the project to its 150th anniversary.
