Did you know that one of Shakespeare’s earliest theatres was in Shoreditch? Well now you do. And now you also know that there is a new theatre about to be erected on the same spot that the original theatre was on.
Romeo and Juliet and Henry V were first staged there and now the location is due a change. Last June a wall was excavated in the plot and it was found out to be that of a historic theatre. This theatre will be preserved if planning goes ahead, behind a glass wall so that it can be viewed and maintained.
£250 million will be spent on a new development in the place where the theatre was that would contain a museum, public park and a 40-storey tower block containing 400 flats and an open-air performance space. The mixed residential and commercial scheme that has been suggested to planning would be named The Stage.
The new proposals will be put to Hackney council planning committee in April
