When we got an invite to check out the new Myspace we were dubious at first as previous makeovers looked rather like they were done by Stevie Wonder whilst having both his hands tied and only his toes free to transform what was once the most exciting site on the internet into something people could love again….sadly it failed. But now thanks to Mr Justin Timberlake and his new team things are looking up, and we have got to be honest here, even our most techy of staff members were impressed by the look and layout of the 2013 Myspace, why? let us explain…
Back in the day when people used Myspace, it was first populated on a modest scale by general people wanting to meet new people and network. Then all that changed as Myspace realised a lot of music artists were using the site as a means of contacting fans and collaborators so they introduced the music player. From that point on Myspace became THE place to launch, find and enjoy the latest from music artists all over the world, Myspace finally found its demographic and for a while, ruled the net waves.
Sadly further down the line Facebook popped up and gave those without aspiring music careers a place to be social. Then rather than Myspace staying true to what helped make it so popular, it focused less on the music (and keeping things running smooth) and more on trying to be like Facebook. Faster and more user friendly alternatives quickly formed such as Soundcloud, Spotify and Twitter meaning Myspace was almost killed off completely.
How could it be saved? Well it needed to focus on the music again in an new, innovative way, and what better way to do that than have one of the most innovative music artists behind it all. Myspace owner Justin Timberlake has clearly put a lot into helping the site focus on what’s important possibly inspired by his Napster founder role in The Social Network he has tried to help Myspace focus on one goal rather than jumping between the forte’s of several sites.
Think of it like this, nowadays we load up Twitter to see what our favourite artists have to say, then Facebook to show us what our friend are doing, Soundcloud or Spotify to listen to our music, Youtube to see music and funny videos and Instagram to see photos…we don’t realise just how much effort some people put into enjoying their favourite artist, and though that’s fine, wouldn’t it be easier to have it all in the same place again? enter the new Myspace…
The new myspace plans to bring it all together, and already has most of the biggest artists gearing up to use it as not only does it make things more simple for the user, but the artist no longer has to load up several apps/sites just to share certain content…with everything made simply, easier, it just makes sense that something like Myspace makes a comeback.
And lets not forget the vital part of its reinvention, making it easier for new artists to launch careers and get all their content in one place. New artists trying to build a fan base on one site is hard enough, but to then get them to port over to all your other sites can sometimes be near on impossible, so while a fan might be enjoying music on Soundcloud, they could be missing all the tour date announcements on Twitter or vice versa. The good thing about Myspace back in the day was that it had everything you could want to know about the artist laid out on one page, their music, gigs, photos, blogs and more without them having to splash out on an expensive personal website and then splash out further getting people to come to it.
In a time where music careers are started on our TV screens via trashy karaoke shows, now more than ever the music scene and we, the public, need something like Myspace back in our lives, for it was the good old Myspace that helped launch some of the UK’s greats such as Plan B, Ed Sheeran, Lily Allen and more back in their early days.
Luckily you don’t have to just read our verdict on it, you can check out the new Myspace for yourself with the help of a little email address from us. If you email whosjack@myspace-inc.com they you’ll be sent back an activation link to test out the site yourself.
