A new bar called Qui Qui Ri Qui has opened up in Shoreditch and has the proud title of London’s first proper Mezcal Bar, Mezcal being the lesser-
Mezcaleria Qui Qui Ri Qui opened on the 5th October and tongues have been set a wagging for their offering of the finest hand crafted mezcals coming out of Mexico.
Much like the difference between sparkling wine and Champagne the different between Tequila and Mezcal is largely a matter of location. Tequila was originally made from the sap from the heart of the blue agave plant. Today you know you have a Tequila if it has been made from the blue agave in government-specified areas of Jalisco, Mexico, and a Mezcal if it has been made from any variety of agave.
Mezcal bars are already often found in Paris and New York and now much like many of the bars opening up London has followed the US suit.
The mezcals that Qui Qui Ri Qui are serving come from a new wave of young producers in Mexico who have gone to great lengths to perfect a modern day drink using the traditional techniques that have defined mezcal production for centuries.
The interior of Qui Qui Ri Qui is dark and perfect for raucous mezcal fueled evenings with a very homely, cobbled together look – but in the nicest possible way.
You can go and try some mezcal for yourself and find the new bar at The Golden Grill, 184 Hackney Road
