Listen to Fiction‘s new single ‘Careful’ taken from their forthcoming album.
You may think you haven’t heard of Fiction before, but then so did I. That was before I caught them at Festivals last summer and heard their tune Big Things. It took me all weekend to figure out, somewhat disappointingly (I thought I knew it from my mental record collection), that I actually recognised it from this.
I resolved that wherever I’d heard it, it was a great track. Stripped back and simple with a deceptively catchy hook and an addictive re-listenable quality. It was only second in line after Metronomy’s ear worm The Look in my list of tunes that clung to you in the muddy fields and just wouldn’t let go. They’re the kind of tunes that when you’re finally trying to get to sleep in your tent, you’ll hear someone walk past humming the melody and then, that’s it, you’re done for.
I kept an ear out for anything new from the band after the summer and it turns out they’ve been beavering away on an album with Klaxons producer James Ford due out this June. The first single is available to listen to now on the Moshi Moshi soundcloud and it’s entitled Careful.
It’s nice to see they’ve honed the sounds they were making last year, echoes of Talking Heads and even similarities between this and the new Maccabees record. Ethereal synths and clicky tight drums that are really tough to shake alongside earnest and at times really beautiful vocals.
After a bunch of shows including touring with Warpaint, Klaxons, Metronomy and a slot at SXSW, the band are set to play the Camden Crawl in May.
