Lawless comes out in cinemas this week and if you don’t go and see it we will personally come and pay you a visit to whack you around the head with a big full jar of moonshine.
Set in the Depression-era in Franklin County, Virginia three brothers who make up a bootlegging gang are said to be near on invincible until a new deputy rolls into town looking to get a cut of their profits.
So ensues a cripplingly violent battle between the brothers and the deputy throwing up some really stomach turning scenes and some amazing one liners/recoveries.
As an audience we don’t understand how anyone could not instantly warm to Forest, the oldest brother, played by Tom Hardy who’s no nonsense, quiet ways keep the three bothers together and in check. Tom Hardy totally redeems himself with this role from his last film, This Means War which in our opinion he shouldn’t have touched with a barge pole.
Shia Labeouf is also due to win a bevy of fans back after his stumble through Transformers 3 with his portrayal of Jack, the youngest brother of the group.
The film really is the best we’ve seen in some time mixing bloody violence and suspense with real sadness, empathy and even a few full on belly laughs.
If you see one film this year and you don’t mind a bit of squinting at the screen when there is a bit too much blood then this needs to be it.
