Oh dear Lana Del Rey’s been getting a bad rap on the bloggersphere lately.
It seems that one good video and track and some nice bigs lips aren’t quite enough to keep the internet wolves from the door. It emerged last week that yes the girl has had surgery on her ridiculously large lips and also that the rest of her material might not be as mesmerising as we first all thought.
It also turns out that the ever so alt female singer capturing many a ‘new music searching’ eye is a failed mainstream artist who has been totally ‘rebranded’ with major label dollar.
So the public meets Lizzy Grant (AKA Lana) who used to have normal lips and bright blonde hair and the bloggers go nuts with comments like :
“Do female artists like Lana Del Rey succeed based on ‘talent’ or are ‘looks’ more important than we would like to admit, even in our beloved indiesphere?”
“ Is she just a ‘pretty face’ in front of a talented producer?”
“Should she just start releasing bikini photos instead of mp3s?”
Not ideal for the PRS and label who have pushed to hard to create a reputable artist. In a speedy attempt to work out what best to do in this situation Lana’s PRs have retorted with a live video of an acoustic electric unplugged live version of the song Blue Jeans. It seems an attempt to prove that she can sing and does have what it takes when along rather than with an enormous moulding team behind her. Whether that will bring back the good favour is unlikely with websites like Artrocker commenting ‘I think she should at least pretend that she plays piano on one song, just so they can sell the entire ‘singer-songwriter’ angle’.
