Artist Kiera Blakey is next in line to be spoken to for our Tools Of My Trade series, she is also exhibiting at the forthcoming Contemporary London exhibition.
What tools couldn’t you live without in your work
My collection of printer/copiers, Photoshop, my scrap box of bits of wood, fabric, polystyrene, tape and car body filler (I’m a bit obsessed with different sandpapers to get the perfect surface).
What inspires you
Museums – I love to scour through the British Museum or V&A looking at weird old artefacts. Contemporary dance – I’m a huge fan of Hofesh Schechter and William Forsyth. I like to absorb the environment I’m working in so simply taking a walk in the city of a current project of exhibition, doing it like the locals. I also obsessively scan book-spines in libraries looking for inspiration for titles for works or catalysts for new lines of research.
What motivates you
A genuine passion for contemporary art. The fact that I’m freelance and run my own projects, there’s no one to call in sick to!
What you would be doing if it wasn’t art
It’s difficult to answer because I honestly don’t feel like there’s anything I could be happier doing. Probably an archaeologist or something, so that I could rummage around with old artefacts.
