It has been confirmed that John Galliano will be making a comeback in the fashion world. After being fired in 2011 by Dior for making Anti-Semitic remarks in a Parisian cafe, it didn’t look like he would be returning anytime soon. He is to take a temporary residency with Oscar de la Renta’s studio based in New York.
De la Renta has said about the return of Galliano, “John and I have known each other for many years and I am a great admirer of his talent. He has worked long and hard on his recovery and I am happy to give him the opportunity to reimmerse himself in the world of fashion and reacclimate in an environment where he has been so creative.” It has been rumoured that the editor of Vogue US Ann Wintour was the first to come up with the idea as she is friends with both the designers.
Seems like Galliano is happy about working with de la Renta also, “I am grateful to Oscar beyond words for inviting me to spend time with him in the familiar surroundings of a design studio. His support and faith in me is humbling.” He also admitted to being an alcoholic, which he claims was the reason behind his racial comments, and that he remains committed to making amends to those he has hurt.
The Anti-Defamation League, which fights against Anti-Semitism have shown their support of Galliano with the national director, Abraham H. Foxman saying that they do believe people can change their “hearts and minds as long as they demonstrate true contrition.” So it seems the majority are behind his return.
