From the outside it doesn’t look like much but inside Jaguar Shoes in Old Street is a gallery, music, fashion and food venue that is popular with Shoreditch types. But it looks the venue could be about to lose their name.
After opening in 2001 on Kingsland Road Jaguar Shoes became one of the most popular venues in the area but now it looks like it might have to change it’s name after huge car manufacturer Jaguar decided to take legal action against them.
Jaguar have made a legal complaint to the Intellectual Property Office about the fact that the art collective are using their name and are demanding that they change it immediately.
Opened by a brother and sister Jaguar Shoes is actually based in a building that has been there since the 1970s and used to be a shoe shop. When they opened the space they realised that they loved the name and the history it represented so much that they decided to keep it.
The issues were apparently first caused when Jaguar Shoes tried to trademark the name to prevent others from using it however when Jaguar Cars heard what they were doing their ears pricked up and they decided to put a stop to the whole thing.
A decision will be passed in three weeks about whether the venue, which regularly hosts exhibitions of local and international artists, will be allowed to keep their name.
If you feel strongly about it then you can sign an online petition against the change right here.
