The proposal for a floating airport on the Thames estuary has been the issue of much debate over the last few months but is this what the airport will look like if it gets given the thumbs up?
Dreamt up by the architect Gensler the concept, which sees an airport floating on the water, could be what the estimated £50 billion structure looks like if it ever goes ahead.
With many dubbing the idea ‘Boris Island’ it remains to see whether there’s enough support to make this idea a reality but there’s no harm in a bit of speculation while we wait to find out. If Gensler’s idea is chose for the job his design will include runways stretching 5km with terminals and shopping/eating areas places in between them. All this will be anchored and fixed to the bed of the Thames.
Now, while we think this design looks very shiny and impressive we’re not overly convinced we’d ever want to take off or land from there. Firstly it doesn’t seem all that safe to land a plane on water and secondly we don’t fully understand how we’d even get over to the airport even if we wanted to. Either way the amount of money, permission and time it’d take to get this thing off the ground we don’t think it’ll be something we have to worry about for many, many years.
