A brilliant article has been put out by CNNGO about how to survive the London Olympics through the eyes of America.
Quotes from the article have been circling Twitter this morning as they are just brilliant and show excellently how our friends across the pond view us Brits.
Much like the recent launch of ‘The Pikey’ America’s take on a British gastro pub we thought that some of these tips to fitting in might be a little odd. However either this piece was written by a Londoner or someone that has done some very good social studying. Because the whole thing is spot on. They are certain and now we are too that if you read their survival guide for London you will avoid feeling like ‘ Oprah in India ’.
Titled, London As A Local the piece has these very handy tips for anyone traveling to London over the Olympic period. What we really want to do is repost the whole lot because it’s a great piece but we will just pick out our key favourites and if you want to read the whole thing you can find it here.
Brilliant tips for ‘faking it’ as a Londoner :
‘London is home to some of the planet’s best art galleries, theaters and historical sites. To be a true Londoner, you must ignore these entirely.’
‘A common misconception among newcomers is that an evening out in London will involve a meal’
‘In some bars you may see something called “Pork Scratchings” for sale. These are not for you’
‘The secret to blending in with locals lies solely in the use of one word: “innit” — a colloquial abbreviation of “isn’t it?”’
‘A true Londoner does not cross the river unless forced by violence, employment, or the lure of alcohol. Only bad things lie on the other side.’
‘even when you find a stranger inadvertently wedged into crevices of your body that you never knew existed, under no circumstances must you look them in the eye.’
On the Olympics :
“Most Londoners view the Games in the same way they did World War II: they didn’t ask for it and it’ll make their lives hell for a while, but they’ll be excited when their side wins anything.”
