It’s difficult to believe that over 20 years ago, text messaging first began!
On this day, in 1992, engineer Neil Papworth sent across the first SMS message from computer to his friend’s (Richard Jarvis of Vodafone) mobile. It read, ‘Merry Christmas’. The technology was not advanced enough at the time for Jarvis to reply.
Years later, the first SMS service was built in 1994 by Telia, a Swedish company, swiftly followed by Vodafone.
We’d like to say thank you to text messaging, for giving us the expressions LOL and LMFAO, as well as emoticons, such as :’) (which, if you didn’t know after 20 years, means ‘I’m crying’).
