Inventor / designer extraordinaire Dominic Wilcox has come up with these awesome GPS shoes. Perfect after a night out, the shoes guide the wearer home using lights in the toes.

His inspiration for the ‘No Place Like Home’ shoes was the Wizard of Oz, so it just takes the wearer a click of the heels to activate the GPS and direct you to a destination uploaded via a USB.

The left shoe gives directions, the right boasts a ‘progress bar of lights’ to show how far you’ve left to go.

As a nod to Dorothy, the inside of the shoes are lined with red leather and Wilcox has illustrated a little journey home on the sole.

Want a pair? Unfortunately these are just a prototype, commissioned by a visual arts and living heritage programme called Global Footprint in Northamptonshire.

But you can see them up close at Dominic Wilcox’s solo exhibition at KK Outlet, 42 Hoxton Square, London till next Wednesday, the 26th September. Also worth a look while you’re there is his first book, Variations on Normal, highlighting some of his quirkiest inventions taken from his sketch pad.

Wilcox says, “I spend most of my time attempting to reveal the hidden surprises which are embedded within the banal, everyday things that surround us.”
