Damon Albarn has revealed that Gorillaz may release new material without their animator Jamie Hewlett.
The set up for Gorillaz has always been that Albarn writes and records the songs while animation artist Hewlett concentrated on making the visuals that made the band such a success in the first place. But now Albarn has revealed that he may go ahead and record music without him his Gorillaz partner.
Speaking to Shortlist Albarn revealed, ‘It was very much Jamie [Hewlett] did the visuals and I did the music. The music won’t change, so there could be another Gorillaz record tomorrow.’
He then went on to tell the London magazine that the band could go ahead without Murdoc, the animated aspect of the band before adding, ‘Jamie wants to do other things and I understand.’
Before Gorillaz fans begin despairing never fear the door hasn’t closed for Hewlett permanently. Albarn did go on to add that if Hewlett changed his mind in a few years and wanted to put out another Gorillaz album he’d jump at the chance.
Rumours began flying that Gorillaz could be calling it a day a few weeks ago when Albarn let slip that it was ‘unlikely’ they’d put out any more material before adding that Blur’s Hyde Park show this summer could well be the bands last. We hope not, on both counts.
