Smart and relaxed is the order of the day this winter when it comes to menswear.
We saw a number of catwalks including suits for AW12 last year and it’s now time to put those trends into practice. We figure you can start buying these bits early whilst they are a)most likely in the sale and people want summer clothes and b)perfect for the crappy summer we are having anyway.
So how best to achieve a smart yet relaxed look ? The jacket is key. You need a tailored jacket, preferably a suit jacket or over coat. Underneath this you can go for a shirt (tucked in and fitted) or polo shirt.
Loafers help a lot, and getting them in a colour adds to the ‘relaxed’ feel of the smart look. Coloured socks and cravats also have the same effect.
Trousers can be jeans (not, never, ever, boot cut) or a chino in a cream or a colour. Don’t go for black or you’ll look like you’re going to the office.
The other thing that works with the smart casual look is shorts. Think trousers cut off above the knee and you’re there. It’s a perfect non-existent summer through to winter cross over.
Selfridges have a good gathering of smart stuff here.
