An extended trailer for upcoming sci-fi action reboot Dredd has been released. While children of the 90s may remember the Sylvester Stallone version which released 17 years ago, this is considered to be an independent reboot of the comic book character Judge Dredd.
Karl Urban stars as the titular purveyor of justice, taking on a dystopian metropolis which is being ravaged by a new designer drug. So far so standard.
But the trailer seems to suggest that it will take plenty of cues from The Raid, if only by coincidence. Dredd and his rookie sidekick Judge Anderson, played by Juno‘s Olivia Thirlby, have to attack a towering residential fortress peopled by hostile lowlifes and housing a drug king pin at its peak. Sound familiar?
What is perhaps most interesting about Dredd is that, with a reported budget of $45 million, it is a relatively inexpensive revisiting of a comic book IP that is second tier in terms of popularity.
Contrast that with the $200 million that the Total Recall remake is reported to have cost and you canĀ see that this largely British venture has less to lose.
You will be able to catch Dredd at cinemas from September 7th in the UK, with a 3D version also available.
