The first trailer for the follow-up to 2001′s Monsters, Inc. has arrived, indicating that Disney and Pixar are collaborating on what could be the CGI equivalent of Animal House.
Monsters University will be out in the summer of 2013 and act as a prequel, featuring the original’s protagonists Sulley and Mike during their college days at the University of Fear.
Given that the conclusion of Monsters, Inc. saw the pair converting the plant that powered their parallel dimension to run on children’s laughter rather than screams, the filmmakers had little choice but to delve further back in their chronology.
Billy Crystal and John Goodman will reprise their roles as the chummy odd couple leads, while Steve Buscemi is also returning as Randall the morally dubious lizard thing. Hopefully the presence of the near-ubiquitous Ken Jeong will result in a character that avoids the Asian stereotypes with which he has become associated.
We can only hope that this film follows the lead of Toy Story 2 and does not become another Cars 2.
