Bow roundabout has been named by many as Death Junction and some would say rightly so due to its poor design and two recent cycle death fatalities is as many weeks.
As Londonist reports ‘The design fault lies in the fact that traffic wanting to turn left at the roundabout has to cross a cycle lane which is heading straight on, leading to collisions between vehicles and those on bikes.’
TFL has been made aware of the issues and have for the time being installed signs around the junction warning cyclists and drivers of one another’s presence but some think these signs could be positioned better.
It’s all leading into a big debate where now TFL wants opinions on it’s two new ideas to help matters.
Either :
‘A cycle ‘early-start’ phase at the traffic signals on the eastbound and westbound entrance to the Bow roundabout. This would provide a dedicated green light phase to allow cyclists to travel ahead of other traffic.’
or
‘Reducing the existing flyover across Bow roundabout from two traffic lanes to one in both directions, with new dedicated cycle lanes. Traffic signals could also be installed at either end of the flyover to make safe access easier for cyclists.’
