It’s one of the most iconic buildings in the world and now Big Ben is to be renamed in honour of the Queen.
You may remember that a few months ago that we told you about a group of MPs who were campaigning for the tower that houses Big Ben to be renamed in order to celebrate the Queen’s 60 years on the throne. Well this morning those plans have been given the go ahead and the building will now be known as The Elizabeth Tower.
It’s worth pointing out that Big Ben is actually just a nickname given to the building after the bell that tolls within the clock. It’s not the buildings real name so there’s no real need to get too upset about the fact they’re changing the name of one of London’s most beloved buildings because we can still call it whatever the hell we want.
The name change is yet another sign of the lengths London is going to in 2012 to prove it’s Britishness to the world ahead of the Olympic Games following a number of building renovations, make overs and tidy ups over the past few months.
