With all the hysteria surrounding the upcoming Spice Girls musical, the return of Sabrina the Teenage Witch and the resurgence of tie-dye, it’s clear: the ‘90s are back, in a big way. And why not? Fun, vibrant and colourful, it’s a great look to update your wardrobe with.
Hang on, it wasn’t all crop tops and mood rings – there are some ‘90s styles that should definitely stay buried! We look back at some of the worst trends that defined the decade.
Day-Glo Fur Jackets
Is that a Muppet I see before me? No, it’s just a(n extremely questionable) jacket made of shaggy fake fur. Warm as they may have been in winter, they did make the wearer look like a colourful extra from Where The Wild Things Are.
Overalls
Urgh. I don’t know whose bright idea it was to want to look like they were really, really into DIY (or pregnant), but this trend never looked good. Extra cool points were given for wearing one strap undone.
Dummy Necklaces
I blame Baby Spice for this one.
Stop trying to bring these back, Skechers CEOs. They were bad enough the first time.
Stuffed Animal Backpacks
As seen on hit ‘90s film Clueless, these bags were just way too girly to take seriously. Plus, they were generally tiny – and considering how big mobile phones used to be, it’s a wonder people managed to use them at all.
Butterfly Clips
Remember these? The more of these you managed to cram into your hair, the better, along with some artfully messy ‘up’ do.
Scrunchies
Ick.
