A new change to Islington Council’s rules on bars that sell alcohol after midnight could see an end to late night drinking in the area.
Islington is of course well known for having several late night bars and pubs and is a popular area for North Londoners however with plans coming in to charge venues that want to sell alcohol late at night could this be the end to late nights out in the area?
The ability to impose extra charges comes after a reform was passed in 2011 which gave local councils the right to charge an extra fee to cover the costs of late night policing. Of course in any area where bars stay open until the small hours extra police are needed to keep trouble at bay but this comes at a price which Islington council now want venues to cover.
The extra charges are set to put a strain on some of the areas smaller venues and many fear this could lead to them shutting down or limiting the hours they are open for.
The area is the first council in London to implement the charges.
