The Dissenting Academy is the newest pub to hit Newington Green at 92 Mildmay Park and it opens its doors on Friday 24th August 2012 at 5pm – that’s today!
If you are wondering what the hell a Dissenting Academy is then we’ll tell you. They were places where radical thinkers would gather in the olden days. These thinkers would challenge the conventions and accepted ideologies of the day. It just so happens the the most famous of these academies was in Newington Green, with its teachings influencing such luminaries as Daniel Dafoe and Mary Wollstonecraft, whose own writings ultimately changed society and influenced the way we live now.
This won’t be going on in the Dissenting Academy of 2012 at Newington Green, probably because there will be beer on tap but we like the sound of the new place either way.
It seems that The Dissenting Academy will be challenging convention in other ways, with some art and music. The general manager of the new pub, Ben King said “I love art and music that challenges convention, and I want to reflect this in the environment created in the pub.”
It does seem like the pub will be holding up the values of ye olden days and also keeping things pub-ish with an old fashion feel however don’t get too fooled, this isn’t an independent, it is the third site in London opened this year by InnBrighton (IB).
